I've never had an MOT tester lift the bonnet on any of my cars.

My tester always inspected the brake master cylinder with an assistant pressing hard on the pedal, to check that it was secure and no leaks. That saved my neck when my Gilbern brake fluid found a weak spot and dumped all the fluid on the ramp.

Going back to the issue in the OP, MMC found the issue to be the "middle module" (whatever that means, I assume not the main ECU but related to it). Replaced and issue resolved. I'll pick the Mog up next week.
