Kevin, I hope a simple relay replacement resolves your fuel pump issues, fingers crossed.

Apologies, if I spoiled your post to any degree by drifting back to mid 80`s Trad thinking re a failed starter motor relay I suffered when the pitting on the relay`s contacts would occasionally cause the starter motor to run on after the key was released and the engine had fired up..!

Well done gentlemen! tipshat smile

In my case, I would have started (PUN!) merely verifying the pump function first. Takes a sec. Morgan EFI wiring prevents easy testing of the power to the pump,(easily altered) but one can use a spare battery on the external contacts of the pump and check if you have a resulting hum.

Like many automobile manufacturers, the MMC switched to in-tank pumps roughly three decades ago. Many incorporate that fuel VDO-like level sender. THIS in-tank pump is seriously inexpensive and can be had for under 50£ assuming it is not the LR one. They are a HUGE plus for the manufacturers though not for owners or dealers. Being submerged in fuel keeps them cool and they can be sure to last the life of the warranty. Also all EFI high pressure pumps are more delicate and they prefer pushing than pulling fluid even for a short distance. When the MMC recreated last CDN Plus 8, I resorted to an intank pump because of mystifying problems I encountered (obvious in hindsight). But the intank worked for 20 years until I decided to change to a better tank than even the fuel cell I had been using since 2003. I designed a tank and had it made by a local Quebec shop...another story.

But it was designed FOR an external pump. Intank pumps are messy for owners. I then tried a bunch of those 400£+ external pumps made by big name aftermarket companies which gave me the unwanted opportunity to all learn again about fuel pumps. However, I finally realized that my trusty Walbro, at the same cost, was also made in a variant that could be used outside the tank. I also learned what my mistakes had been 20 years before!!!!

Intank fuel pump problems;

1. They are not properly maintained by normal owners or most dealers. No one's fault as we are told by the manufacturers (aside from the aftermarket who makes them) that these filters last the life of the engine, but they don't...unless it is a very bad engine! smirk2
The filters get dirty. Here is what googling shows. https://www.pikipikioverland.com/wp...msterdamtoanywhere-fuel-pump-400x225.jpg and it matches what I have seen over and over again with trads. One can installer a filler filter for 250£ for what they are worth but they create slow fuelling and regularly give you a pant leg of petrol and a paint job covered in corrosive fuel. Of course the dirty filters force the pump to work extra hard.

2. Alternatively, and very common, if the fuel is allowed to run too low and the car is run on a steep slope, these pumps burn out in a few moments.

As the first generation of Morgan intank fuel pumps is now a quarter of century old, these things are happening ever more regularly.

In any event, these intank variants pumps are very cheap and swapping them is not complicated. I have even done it roadside. But no more 😛. I like a owner-friendly Morgan.

WATCHPOINT: Be very careful, if ever comes to that, about what hose type you use INSIDE A TANK, If it is not rated to be submerged in petrol, it will soon melt. Use SAE 30R10 rated. Gates 30R10, corrugated P12 Nylon, and PTFE-lined hoses This is why such pumps are sold as a kit including a small length of hose.
