Maybe some member of this august forum who is knowlegeable about paint can give me an answer.

I have a large race-car trailer .. unlike most it is painted black ... over the years the paint has weathered to where it is just about wholly matt.

When it rains the trailer looks great ... black and shiny.

If I were to spray it with a gloss clear coat would it look like it was permenantly wet?

I'd rather do that than try to paint it black again with a colour coat.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

I would try a small area, but be careful NC paints use a different varnish to water-based paints and they don't react well.

Have you tried a polish?

My front gates are faded black, but I resisted a clearcoat because a rattle can clear coat is tricky to get even. A professional paint shop would do it but it would need proper prep to degrease and ensure that the clear coat sticks.

On the gates I do an occasional WD40 refurb and that sticks around a while. Other oil based products will give a shine, its a matter of testing. That way although you won't then easily be able to add paint. its easy to make shiny for a while..........

Could a decent paint shop not mop it and polish it....???
I've taken paint issues to a guy near me that I thought were terminal and they just sort it out......🤷🏻‍♂️

What about a gloss vinyl wrap. I bought a pushbike that had a fancy paint job that goes from purple to green depending on the angle but for some stupid reason a mat finish. For some reason kids like mat finish according to the shop. I got it wrapped in a clear gloss vinyl wrap and now it looks fantastic.

I would try polishing as a first option. As Julian says above. Either a bodyshop, a proper paint restorer/paint corrector. Try a diy test on a small area yourself to see how the polishing ends up. Then a coat of wax/ceramic (for protection. There are many good polishes available such as Autoglym, Meguiars, Autofiness etc. and the pros can get even more.
Be aware.....you get that front area good but then the rest looks bad compared to it You then get the whole trailer re-done!

Many thanks for the replies ... got plenty to think about .... may end up biting the bullet and getting the spray gear out and a gallon of gloss black ... though Julian's idea of just embracing the rat-rod look is very tempting!! 😆

You know it makes sense.....

It does ... only niggle is that I tow this trailer with my Iveco camper up and down the UK in the racing season and I don't want it attracting the attention of the Traffic Wombles ... such are the rules these days that if they decide to find something to justify their jobs then they could, even on a car sraight out of the showroom .... as with many things, the best idea is to stay off their radar in the first place 🙂

Bit radical...but, I've done it in the past with decent results

Rub it over with a thin coat of Waxoil on a rag, preserves the patina from further fading, brings back a bit of colour depth and dries a sort of nice satin finish
