"When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things." (1 Corinthians 13:11). Well, not me. But when I look back from what the French call le troisième âge I realize that my automotive tastes have subtly shifted. For one thing, HP is less important. For another, to the extent I care about what others think of my car at all, it's to bring a smile rather than to impress. And for some reason "soul" has somehow become more important than engineering prowess. Finally, even though I really enjoy reading new car reviews (and now, watching them on YouTube, which is fantastic) I'm more aware that today's hot young thing breathlessly extolled in the automotive press is (usually) just tomorrow's used car. This got me to wondering how others on this forum have experienced this: have your automotive tastes been pretty consistent, or have they changed over time?

Not really, always preferred open top cars all my life, still do,only real change prefer automatics over manuals, and age sometimes restricts choices eg prefer comfort over discomfort eg heated seats.

Car reviewers haven't really changed over time, I remember reading over excited reports about the halo Porsche 911 (930) turbo, for many a child's bedroom wall poster, when I got a cabriolet version I wondered what all the fuss was about.............................

For me,

my first car was a Morris Minor 1000.

my second car was a Morris Minor 1000.

my third car was a Morris Minor 1000.

I would buy a new one tomorrow if they were still being made....

Funnily enough, my taste in vehicles hasn't changed (old Brit bikes and cars) ... what has changed is how I approach them .... when I was younger they'd be restored gleaming and perfect ... now I tend towards the proper 'lived-in' look ... mechanically sound but carry their miles proudly (so a bit like me really 🙂)

I am with you on this all my Moggies have the well driven look. I'm off to Vancouver Island in June which will be almost 4000 mile round trip in the +8.

In terms of my Morgan I follow a similar pattern to your thinking K, it was once a concours spec machine, now it reflects it`s miles a tad more than it used to...call it all just part of the evolutionary process of a man and his machine..? (-:

My tastes haven't changed much, I still can't afford what I lust over however as I've got older the cars I enjoy have tended to be of the older type/design, I have no love for tech just for the sake of it but as long as it is a soft top mostly anything will bring a smile to the old boat race along with a back pain probably.

My taste in classic cars hasn’t changed at all. When I was about 11, I discovered a Morgan in a book at the library and decided that someday I’d buy one. At age 33, I was happy to make that dream a reality with a 4/4. I still have that car today. There was also an advertising poster for a cigarette brand hanging in my bedroom as a teenager, featuring an Indian Chief motorcycle. I was able to make that dream come true as well in the form of a 1946 Indian Chief; I rode it just yesterday. Even back then, as a teenager in the ’80s, I didn’t like almost any of the new cars. They were boxy and had ugly black plastic bumpers. It was a treat to see a Mercedes 170 or a Citroën Traction Avant on the road. Around age 18, I also started reading classic car magazines. So, until I bought the Morgan, I drove three Citroën 2CVs with great pleasure.

When it comes to everyday cars, I’m extremely pragmatic. All I want is for it to get me to my destination warm, dry, and comfortable enough. And the Dacia Logan MCV does exactly that.

Gosh Jens, from your post I initially thought you were going to say you had taken up smoking …!
I had a poster in my bedroom of that tennis girl (Fiona) wearing no underwear and scratching her wonderful bottom.
I never took up tennis but I did take up women !
