I’m fairly sure the 80th era of 4/4 is the same width inside as the wider winged models, ie, barely any room. CX cars are amazing by comparison, both chassis and interior space, Revolutions in Perth kindly gave me a quick shot in one, maybe one day.

Totally unrelated, but here’s some pictures of the Revolutions visit, nice motorcycles too for those interested.

…………all the long door trad cars are the same width, 4/4 to roadster. The big difference internally is the width/girth of the transmission tunnel……🤷🏼‍♂️
All the chassis are the same, it’s the wing width sets the different models apart.

You’re definitely right, shoulder space is limited…… but it’s a ‘continuation’ vintage car, so it’s the price to be paid for driving a ‘modern’ incarnation of a design which should have been cancelled 60+ years ago.
I’m 6’3 and fairly wide, fortunately the 1st wife is….. compact….. so we both fit. 😁

The CX cars are definitely bigger all round…… but I guess they’re designed from a blank piece of paper so easier to fit the body of the 21st century……🤷🏼‍♂️

I was wrong once…. it was when I thought I was wrong but wasn’t.

From memory, so obviously much room for error there, I think the last of the narrow body 4/4s was around 2004 with the Zetec engined cars, runabout and bespoke 4/4. Once the 1.8 Duratec engine came in for the 4/4 the chassis became the same for roadster, plus 4 and 4/4 so the internal width was identical the difference in width being in the wings.

My '86 and 2000 4/4's were tighter in width in the cockpit than both the subsequent Roadsters

The spec on the 2000 4/4 was for a factory fit four seater 'screen which obviously gained a taller hood when up - felt quite spacious inside

Our 1999 Plus 8 are similar in that our Son and I are 48" chest people and it's snug but does not inhibit spirited driving in any way - the 2009 4/4 Sport is similarly a familiar fit.

The Mrs at 9 stones wet Daughter in Law 8 stones wet, rattle around in both under spirited driving conditions on the rare occasions they give them an airing.

As the 4/4 Sport lives in Cornwall for the summer Joe and his good lady fit well.

Julian your spot on, All the long door cars have the same chassis' and are the same dimensionally in the tub. The wing size differs in order to fit the wheel off-set dimensions and are individually cut to fit each car for precise fitting. This means between the different cars there is up to 3" difference in width with the 4-4 the narrowest and the roadster the widest, plus four in the middle. There has only been one anomaly in the long door dimensions and that was a plus 4 sport with a narrow front crosshead. It was built in limited numbers as a limited edition however some new customer orders were requested to be built like that as well at that time.
The Roadster as Julian said has a larger dimensioned gearbox and therefore the transmission tunnel is larger taking up more internal space in the footwells, if you wish to fit a footrest/ security foot locker in the footwell the Roadster needs the 10" version rather than the 12" example for the rest.
So in conclusion the later, long door cars are all the same width within the cabin area. As an aside fitting a foot locker is a very good addition to your car. It will achieve a secure place for valuables and a much greater level of comfort for your passenger. I am 5'10" and sitting in the co-pilots seat is quite a strange experience as your feet are straight out in front of you with nothing to brace you. This is especially noticeable under braking.

Interesting, I found my 70th 4/4 was tighter at shoulder height,always rubbing with my passenger, the Roadster 4 seater felt wider at shoulder height and no rubbing, same with the Plus 4 Sport no shoulder rubbing.......maybe the gearbox width changes your seating/posture orientation from car to car. Certainly the Roadster 4 seater the drivers seat was more upright and higher which created less of a problem for us. The CX is just in another league, although the thicker door and side screen panels do initially make the interior feel a little more cramped, but actually is far more comfortable over longer journeys, the comfort seats certainly help there and there is more room at shoulder height with your passenger..

Both cars exactly 47 3/4" @ 475' amsl and 15C...
