I bought my third 4/4 ( 2012 ) last December and unfortunately due to ongoing horrendous weather I didn't get the opportunity to drive it until last weekend ( Easter ) - I did about 150 miles between Good Friday and Easter Monday and absolutely loved it.

Unfortunately on Easter Monday, it started to run "rough" , and seemed to be "missing" and sounding like it was running on three cylinders. at one stage I was beginning to wonder if I'd actually make it home, fortunately I managed to make it, parked up and five minutes later tried to turn it on again and it refused to start ! I left it for half an hour, tried again and it started first time, albeit running very rough. Subsequently the engine management light came on as I drove it into my garage and parked it up for the week.

Returning to the car today, it started first time and the engine management light came on immediately, it ticks over, albeit very rough.

When I bought the car ( from a non Morgan dealer ) I immediately had it taken to a Morgan specialist who went completely through the car, replaced all fluids, changed the brakes, brake fluid, oil, timing belt, upgraded the suspension, etc, etc and did a brilliant job.

I live in Yorkshire which is approx four hours from them so difficult to get it back for investigation.

In short, has anyone experienced this with their 4/4 or have any ideas as to what the cause may be ?

If it gets worse when the engine warms up then it could be a failed coil pack. I could be wrong, but I’m sure a few on here will be along shortly with far more knowledge

Suggest putting an OBD2 reader on it to see the fault code(s). That's what they're there for.

This, plus: When was the last time you put fuel in it? Was it sat for 4 months with aging fuel? If you don't get anywhere with the faults codes (I bet it will be a P03xx misfire) then I'd try draining as much of the old fuel out as you can, bunging in a fresh tank of E5 and taking it for an Italian tune up, especially if it's a P0300 random misfire.

If it's a specific cylinder indicated (P0301 is a misfire on cylinder 1 etc) then coil packs and plugs would be next on my list to check.

you could also add stabil to the fuel. It will help degunk the injectors

Classic coil pack symptoms

The last time my engine management light came on (2009 4/4) it was an exhaust sensor fault, New sensor was just under £100 if memory serves and cured he problem after a reset.

My 2016 4/4 that I sold developed a misfire and the engine light came on, this was about 18 months after the new owner took it on. He didn’t notice the issue straight away as the car had been sitting in his garage and hadn’t been driven for a while. He eventually decided to put it up for sale on SOR with Brands Hatch Morgan and it was BHM who diagnosed the fault to the printed circuit board behind the dash, it was damaged, and likely due to water ingress or heat and needed replacing. In the end the factory did the repair and it had to be recoded. Think it was called a coded binnacle, I know it wasn’t cheap.
