Following a recent engine oil and filter change, the bonnet was opened to check for any leaks. On reclosing the bonnet, the nearside rear catch knob literally came off in my hand! Don’t know if the bonnet knobs are OE or aftermarket items but the catches have never required gorilla strength to release, so this came as a surprise.
The threaded extension to the catch knob had sheared off at the outer face of the sliding plate and the inner portion of the thread with hex nut remained in the sliding plate. Access to release the catch from inside the bonnet looked to be challenging.
The adopted solution below.

The threaded portion remaining inside the sliding plate was drilled out from the outside and ultimately fell to the running board, complete with nut. The thread was confirmed as M6.

The knob was drilled to 12mm depth, starting at 2.5mm dia and working incrementally up to 5mm dia. The swarf revealed the material to be brass.

An M6 thread was then cut to full depth.

A 25mm length of stainless M6 threadbar was screwed into the newly cut hole, sealed with threadlocker and tightened.

This assembly was then screwed into the sliding plate to enable the bonnet catch to be released. A washer and stainless nyloc nut clamp the knob to the sliding plate, thus making a connection somewhat stronger than the previous arrangement. Job done.
Now that one has failed, more are likely to follow. A winter task will be to strengthen the remaining knobs in like manner.
