Can someone please tell me what this box with a foam top is. Looks like some sort of emissions capture device - or not! The top filter part is badly deteriorating. Any direction on where to source the foam mat is appreciated. Does the unit need any routine servicing?

Can't resolve your picture but from your description it sounds like top of the heaetr box. If so any hardware shop will sell such open cell hard foam.

Looks like a hear box to me.
David if you run the heater fan at full with the engine off can you feel an air flow into the box?
It is not a style I recognise but MMC used the sort of open cell foam sheet you get for aquarium filters.

Yes, John. My guess as well. Below is the photo with a easier orientation for you to recognize, with reference points. I also am adding a photo of what the car looked like originally.

However, as this cabin heater is a post-Smiths, so the bulkhead intake cover likely rusted out and some owner replaced it with something (very well and likely homemade). The original manufacturer,was a Pecks cabin heater and they went bankrupt. Sadly, many owners (1987-1993) were convinced to replace their Smiths with a Pecks which didn't turn out well for them but did for the Smiths crowd! That being said, earlier cabin heaters are a breeze (PUN!) to fix and even upgrade. The famous John Worrall used to sell a polished replacement. (also below)

Additionally, it looks like a non-original grid.

I don't use foam. One has two options to attempt to increase airflow. Either direct the incoming air from the louvres (and filter it) or leave it open. (shrug)

Thanks. Yes, I can confirm that with the heater on it does draw air through the box into the cabin. I’ll see if I can source a piece of dry cell foam from my local pet or home improvement store.
Is there any service / cleaning of the box needed? It’s working fine so I’m inclined to leave it the way it is.
