Hello 🙋‍♂️ My mk1 Aero has the original tyres still fitted ..
Could you tell me what make of tyres are a good choice please ?

It somewhat depends on your driving style however many Aero S1 owners have been quite satisfied moving to Toyo Proxies T1R. You can also consider a slightly wider tyre on the rear as the 225’s tend to be slightly stretched on the rim. From memory a 255 tyre width.

I personally found the OEM fitment Perelli P Zero Rosso not ideal for the car.

If you can find Toyo Proxes T1r in the size you need get them, I’ve had them for 20 years on a plus 4 then a plus 8, very good tyres. I’ve only just replaced mine due to age, sadly no longer available in a size to fit my plus 8.

Toyo Proxies Sport 2 are equivalent to the Michelin Super Sport - so either will be fine if you’re just cruising about. They’ll go hard before you reach their mileage wear limits. Both are designed for a 30,000 mile life - which is way more than you’ll realistically need. I’d be personally looking with something with a little higher wear rating - I.e slightly softer given the weight of the car.

Something like a Kuhmo Ecsta v700 or Yokohama AO52 would be a higher wear grippier tyre though a bit too track focused maybe - the old T1R was a good compromise.

Just looking at Demon Tweeks - they have the Yokohama AD08RS tyre which is an excellent UHP road tyre on 40% off and you could get a size that would work.

I ran Michelin PS5 on my Aero S1 and was very happy with their all round usability.
Quiet, comfortable, excellent road manners wet or dry (even in the snow once!), and will age out long before they wear out - but then that's probably true of any tyre on any Aero.

Agreed re aging out before wearing out. The aero is surprisingly light on its rubber for a RWD car with plenty of hp/lbft and little weight. Even if you do quite a mileage on your car each year they will generally hit age first?

I have Michelin Pilot Supersport on the Aero S2 as the PS4S did not exist in that size when I was buying.

I went a little nuts and bought the more track day optimised Michelin Sport Cup 2 on the Coupe. You can tell when these are cold and are not worth the additional money on roads unless you have room to push on. Still fun though and not scary in the wet.

On the Merc (e63s S212 with a tune on it, 2WD) I use a variety of things to try them out. I get 12-15,000 on the fronts and 8-10,000 out of the backs as I have a heavy clog. I normally put a great tyre on the front for the steering feel and a good quality on the back as they will get toasty. A the moment I have just switched from Michelin PS4S to Continental SC7 on the front and replaced the rears with the same Yokohama Advan Sport 107 as they have been excellent and pretty good value.

When the tyres on the Coupe need replacing I will likely go with the Advans. as they have been really good for a road tyre.
