I remember the days when sellers paid 5% commission. The buyer paid the hammer price, say 20 guineas, the seller got paid £20 and the auctioneer pocketed the 20s difference! I was amazed when buyers' premiums came in.

In fairness to Mathewsons though, as Nick says, their rates - entry fees £40 and sellers commison 7.5% up to £20K - are below average. The video is interesting and does acknowledge that Mathewsons have staff and property overheads. Their Companies House filings don't include a profit and loss account, but the balance sheet reveals in 2025 they had 25 employees and a property lease cost of £468K.

My main gripe with Mathewsons is their constant banging on about pre-war cars not selling because no-one remembers them. That might be the situation in their corner of the market but other parts of the classic car world are still able to distinguish history from memory.

Also interesting is that the business, Mathewsons Classic Cars Ltd is wholly owned by the sons Dave and Paul, the company bought the auction business from DT Mathewson & Sons on 1st April 2022 for £2million. Derek is just the figurehead not the boss!

Did anyone spot the loose sidelight on top of the n/s wing near the end of the programme with the new owner driving it.
As you probably gather, I am not an avid fan of the Mathewsons. The vehicles interest me only, but all of their verbal diarrhoea just goes over my head.

Just one loose bolt holding the wing support through the wing to the sidelight, ensuring future wing cracking.

She sure was very corroded for such a low mileage one, mine was extremely low mileage too but at least I got every docket from her huge number of services at Alon Whites and they had kept her mint.

I think the location of the car is more important than the mileage, live anywhere near a coastal location ( as I do) the salty environment soon attacks the brightwork, body, plastics, rubber and paint in no time at all. And there is really very little you can really do to prevent the degradation, other than try to stay on top of it with regular cleaning including the underside. If you just lieave a car for years under cover with no intervention they soon deteroiate quite quickly around here.

I live in an area that has a very shallow sea bed and that for some reason promotes more salt and sand being carried on the wind and it gets everywhere. For example a few miles away a couple was killed whilst sleeping, when their bedroom ceiling collapsed under the weight of the sand that had accumulatived in their loft over the years

We have lived here on the coast for 52 years and four Morgan's over the 34 years all used year round other than salted roads.

I have never fitted an indoor cover as I think they are a bad idea personally, just using the car is beneficial to all parties.

The most important job is to trickle 3 in 1 oil down the seams as instructed in the handbook, it's the bits you don't see that destroy the car from the inside out.
Nothing a good wash topsides and underpinnings twice a year keeps things healthy and a touch up of any proofing underneath annually helps.

When we have had a good Westerly the windows et al look like the inside of a Smiths crisp bag as widely reported on National news..

Bangers & Cask Plus 8 belonged to a very talented artist called Keith Andrew.

If I remember correctly, it spent most of its time on Anglesey.

Sorry to hear Keith has passed. Met him at Morgan events 10+ years ago - nice chap. He was a long time Morgan owner and also seem to think an enthusiast for a classic obscure American brand - can’t remember the make.

Coincidentally, after meeting him, realised we had a couple of his paintings on our wall bought by my mother in law who owned a holiday home in North Wales.

I think he had a Hudson Terraplane?

I've got a few Keith Andrews as well - Twm and Meg is my favourite as it reminds me of my Taid.
