Is this Talk Trains !? Wonderful . Seen all engines in that class along with Coronation class and many more. The southern running engine on anther post was the class I least spotted over many years as a short trousered trainspotting and British Rail travel.

The compulsion of railways goes beyong the visuals now. The history of how railways evolved in teh UK is a fascination, and a more complex subject than most other historical events. Over the years I've consumed volumes of railway history, and still enjoy watching You Tube presentations. I suppose having all my relatives working for the railway was a big component. Had railways not been in serious decline when I left school, I might have ended up on the engineering side and that would have been a very different life.

The Kingswear branch wqas designed to main line standards, which alows the heavy stuff to get there. I still remember the old track layout with turntable, and a DMU service when I was there as a kid.

Brought a tear to my eye. The memory of getting a slap from Mum because I stuck my head out of the window and got coal in my eye, after she told me not to!

Did a few train driving days in my 20s and early thirties but came across this a few days ago whilst getting rid of papers……

PS Even my wife loves a steam train , been on the footplate of the Flying Scotsman and suggested after a recent to programme that we should go to the National Railway Museum this summer.

I cannot believe what I have just found & read. The video you posted of Sir Nigel Gresley was an option to drive back in the 90s and I didn’t do it !
I am now annoyed at myself and decided with so little time left, I’m not going to make stupid decisions like “I’ll do it another time or next year “ or put things off.

Not really a train person (though do have fond memories of hanging over bridges as a kid to get the blast of steam and that particular locomitive smell of sulphurous wet smoke in the face as the, still regular, steam engines went under) however, I'd heartily recommend the National Rail Museum ... really interesting ..... and a must for anyone remotely interested in 'engineery things' ... Mrs Image had to be dragged out! 🙂
