Yep! A twisty B road, a high-revving 4 pot, flicking between 3rd and 4th, nailing it in 2nd on the way out of tight bends is the essence of what British Sports Cars are all about.

This is already the case with very old sports and race cars, unless they’re absolute displacement monsters. Just watch a video of a Bugatti T35 being driven hard—what a hoarse screeching engine. They made up to 6000 revs/minute.

The old adage that driving a low powered car (or bike) to its limit is more satisfying than trying to tame a powerful beast, that can be unforgiving of mistakes, is well understood.

Maybe the particular 4/4 Sport I owned for a few years was a Friday afternoon offering – I don’t know. What I do know is that it was not my favorite car. I tried very hard to like it, (excursions at both Curborough and Shelsley Walsh were tried) but in the end it just had to be moved on for more beef. In comparison, the Plus 4 has delivered on many levels.

Each to their own I suppose.

I had 4 4/4s and found them very entertaining to drive and enjoyable, but without question the Plus 4 sport I had was the most rewarding to drive, even my 70th 4/4 with 125bhp, I always found a little under powered.

That’s odd, I thought the 4/4 75th and the Plus 4 shared the same 2.0-litre Ford Duratec

No, mine was the 70th, not the 75th and came with the 1-8 duratec and fold down screen as standard.

I have the 75th with the 2 litre engine.

Gentlemen, I wonder if someone would mind enlightening, me as I have only ever had +4's, apart for a brief fling with a couple of early Three Wheelers.

Is there any difference between a 'standard' Sigma 4/4 and a 4/4 Sport or, are all Sigma engined 4/4's - Sport?

Good question Paul, The 4/4 Sport was launched with the Sigma engine and flat back plate thus no spare wheel and mine had a Centenary plaque on the dashboard, no side pockets and an open glove box with no net and weighed in at 795kgs, mine had no tool tray jack or can of squirt so lightweight alright, but it was close to launch time so MMC rules applied...

The really handy feature on them is the letter box behind the seats which holds the side screens and other bits and bobs + the normal luggage area for a couple of grips. Standard popper vinyl roof.

They are considerably lighter and nimbler than a loaded 4/4 with Sigma and fitted with the 80 section Toyo's they grip like crazy and running at 25psi all round are impervious to potholes with very little rolling..

This is mine pre delivery at Henry's old Bristol showroom back in 2009 launch time. The totally uncluttered look holds the appeal for me with the light weight.
