Yep, that's correct apparently it's less hazardous to hook it after a circuit post take off, sounds nuts to me and disappointed I didn't get to see that as my job was to ferry the pro photographer to the vantage point some miles away just before take off, they also eject the banner prior to landing

After all the tuning work and mapping, Monty needed a good run to test his sensible driving fuel economy.

I covered 320 miles in 24 hours including an overnight stay and a 5 hour meeting at my HQ, Monty consumed 8.2 gallons of Shell V-Power to deliver a very credible 39 MPG.

When I first bought Monty, other than the Mulfab front wishbone conversion, he was completely standard; on the factory manifolds, cams, cylinder head and ECU the 143hp Duratec recorded 39mph on a run. I've now increased power and torque by more than 25% but on the same run at the same mostly legal road speeds I'm seeing the exact same 39mpg. Obviously, if I use the extra performance the engine will naturally consume more fuel, but driven sensibly Monty's fuel consumption remains completely unchanged from a bone stock Duratec Plus 4.

Of course this also means the excellent touring range remains unchanged too, as I understand it a 2012 Morgan Plus 4 has a fuel tank capacity of 55 liters so approximately 12.1 UK gallons, this means theoretically Monty has a touring range of 472 miles. However, I note the fuel gauge shows empty when there's still 3 gallons in the tank and that's when I fill up, so that's 9 gallons consumed at 39mpg giving Monty a genuine and very practical touring range of 351 miles with another 3 gallons in reserve when I refill the tank.

If I'm able to maintain a genuine 70mpg average that's 5 hours behind the wheel, in reality even on the motorway it's a lot harder than you think to achieve a true 70 mph average without spending significant time at 80 mph plus. Also, on a touring holiday you'd want a couple of comfort breaks and an hour for lunch so those 9 gallons are going to give you a comfortable 8 hour day on the road.

Personally, I feel that's a big enough touring day in a trad chassis Morgan!

Do you have any idea as to what impact the engine tuning changes have had on your car's emissions, as MOT time is always an annual acid test we all face, to continue to enjoy our cars on the road,

A question I keep meaning to ask you.... do you still have the original and fragile dash PCB, if so what are your thoughts when the inevitable happens?

Ashprington Tractor Fest 2026 was an absolute joy to attend with an incredible variety of machinery on show with classic bikes, cars lorries and military WW2 stuff around but this Fowler 4 pot petrol engined ploughing tractor caught my eye - a glorious BEAST of a thing with a really lovely owner driver who uses it for demonstrations locally.

I spotted the brake pads were wooden and they are fashioned from Poplar as it is least likely to catch fire !

We had a lot in common engineering wise and his wife has a factory MGB with Rover 3.5 which he can't get in he chortled, he was a marvelous Fowler sized man well capable of steering the beast.

He'll be here on the 08/08/26 but we will be touring Eire so will miss this years event.
