Old school relays are already used in the borrowed from Ford fan cooling system, proven in literally millions of their cars George. Although the trigger for fans comes from ECU in turn it likely relies on an old school temp sensor. Having two relays for high and low fan speed provides a degree of built in redundancy as well.

Many thanks for taking the time to raise the reliability factor of Fords digitised systems, and their use of old school tec interfaces, very much appreciated. The problem for me is that as soon as an ECU is involved, unless one is provided with access to the logic contained therein, be that either with a design function specification or access to fault codes via a obd port and reader.... One is left to either rely on ones own accrued logic as to the operation of either the kit in question or similar kit where one has found a similar fault previously..... or one is left staring at the equivalent of a black box..... I thing Dave W`s recent posts provide an example of possible frustrations along similar lines...
As ever Richard I am in awe of your tec understanding and willingness to share it in the hope of helping others....myself included.. (-:

One is left to either rely on ones own accrued logic as to the operation of either the kit in question or similar kit where one has found a similar fault previously..... or one is left staring at the equivalent of a black box It can be a right pain dealing with an ECU that's locked down in any way by the manufacturer, but fortunately there are alternatives, either by replacing the factory ECU with something from one of the aftermarket people like Omex, MBE etc or by purchasing a diagnostic system based on reverse-engineering the pin data. My Morgan has an MBE ECU which is completely programmable, not that I've ever bothered to play with it, it works fine as it is and has done so since the conversion 18 years ago. For the latter type, there are all sorts available just a quick google away, I bought the software to manage my Fiat 500 from a guy in Eastern Europe, it worked a treat, enabling me to do all the stuff that would have otherwise required a main dealer to do. Relying solely on OBDII data is ok for routine maintenance but there are more sophisticated solutions available should one wish.

Many thanks for the heads up on alternative and programable ECU availability Tim, I was mildly aware as I helped my friend fit an LS2 into his much modified Stag, He bought a pre programmed ECU to match the car from the US, with the minimum of inputs and outputs which made for a simplified set-up, and more so given the age of the Stag was such that the emissions controlling aspect of programming was left out.. When it comes to my Morgan I have no desire for more performance or indeed efficiency from it`s dizzy or carbs that might otherwise tempt me into fitting EFI, though the idea of the induction roar from a set of open-ended bell mouths on throttle bodies .....Hmm..? Nah, I will just stick with my rather noisy minimalist exhaust as it provides enough in the way of pop und bang to keep this old fool happy... (-:
