Hi, My 1991 3.9 plus 8 has just developed a leak in a frost plug. Drivers side near the exhaust manifold. Is this an engine out job to fix. I know the fix is relatively straightforward, but access looks difficult.

Suggest you may get more replies if you post in Classic (pre-CX) cars or Maintenance & Servicing - this is for the BMW V8 powered cars. If anything like one of my Land Rovers it was easier to drop the manifold to ease access.

you can usually get good access by removing the exhaust manifold,

Dont know where the core plug or penny as it used to be known is on your engine, once you get access to it simply prize out with a screw driver or players clean the area with a light wire brush put a bead of specialist sealant around and carefully tap the penny back in with a suitable size socket replace the anti freeze, The manifold might have to come off to get access in which case that will take longer than the repair.Someone might be along shortly to let you know about access. Hope this helps

Sorry. There might be more than one on a V8 thinking about it probably best practice to change them both. Older engine and fitted at the same time they have probably choroded at the same rate.
