The GEMS system is quite different and was fitted for a relatively short period in the V8's life. There is a lot of information on the GOMOG site where Lorne tackles it in some detail including scanning fault codes. I'd suggest you have a look there. Lorne is also very happy to answer questions directly and this I feel will be a good shortcut for setting you on the road of understanding.
You do me too much credit Sewin!. 🙂 TY. But at the core of the gomog section on GEMS is David Poole's GEMS Manual, the very first such thing back when. It is brilliant and was all-marque pivotal. Best I can do with GEMS is know where to find answers. David was the eMog GEMS guru, self-taught like I am. FYI, GEMS was used by the MMC for all Overseas +8s, the bulk of its Plus 8 production from 1998 and run with a bespoke fuel map prepared under the direction of Chris Lawrence whole he simultaneously worked on the Aero-to-be. However, after 2000 until 2004, all Plus 8s.used the Discovery 2 version. A total for the MMC of almost 6 years and beating the timeline duration of many other systems. In the UK, the MMC did not switch to GEMS when LR did. They kept using the Hotwire system until 2000. So many almost simultaneous variants make for an incredible mess of conflicting knowledge and parts confusion. 😠Happens every day on forums and parts purchasing.

[/i] My 2003+ 8 has only about 5650 miles, been excellently maintained by previous owner, who obviously hadn't drive in much. I've only driven it 150 miles in short trips since purchasing it last December. The 'check engine' light just came on last night, as I was driving, but the car runs fine, all gauges are where they should be. ..... scanner also like to buy a relatively inexpensive BD reader or scanner, but don't know where to begin, particularly with the old 4-litre engine. I've read here that it is fitted with the GEMS system. Any recommendations from you experts would be much appreciated.

Beware. Low mileage Morgans have a special set of problems all their own. Experience suggests you should stick with short trips until these reveal themselves.
There were many scanners used on this system, including a MMC bespoke one which I have. But most are no longer made. I would NOT own a GEMS without one. They come up on ebay.co.uk regularly. I see yet another scanner being offered in the UK..called iCarsoft. Anyone here know it?

P.S. Don't worry too much about the check engine light...there will be more in time. (wryly) For the rest of us, this light responds to infinitely more calls that it did before issues than it did before complex EFI arrived. Considering it disappeared with better fuel, my guess is this one was caused by the last of the old fuel and a consequently annoyed oxygen sensor (you have 4) . Use the highest octane fuel you can find. .
