I'm at present trying to source a replacement solenoid (separate from the starter and mounted on the firewall) as this seems a good place to start. However, on removing it from the vehicle and having a good look, it has no identifying part numbers or even a make!  Anyone know what the part number would be?  There are two types one for pre-ballast ignition and one for ballast ignition. I would need the latter. Thanks in advance for any help. Neil.

If you have a good old fashioned auto electrician in your town I would suggest talking to him. Given the car is fairly old the stater motor may need new brushes and it is always possible it will need a complete re-build. He should also be able to identify and replace the starter relay. The starter motor will have a brand and model ID stamped on it and the relay will probably be the same brand.
A solenoid is a combination relay and a device that moves a sliding iron core with the creation of a magnetic field to throw the starter gear out. It would always live on top of the starter motor itself and looks like a cylinder that rides piggyback on top of the starter motor. Some starter motors use a different system which throws the gear out when the starter motor starts to spin. They would have a separate relay. In some cases even a starter motor with a solenoid may have a separate relay to protect the starter button or key switch from high current loads.
In either case the older systems can generally be repaired or replaced without huge expense and a competent auto electricians workshop should be able to do the work fairly quickly.

The part number for the LUCAS solenoid is 4.ST 1 / 76766. I took it from the box but it is also printed very small on the black bakelite part.

Checking everywhere and all seemed to be OK, finally I discovered that the trouble came from my battery isolator (which is only fitted for security purpose, because on cars with an electronic ECU it is strongly recommended not to cut the power). I removed and dismantled the switch to try to understand what happened, but no track of malfunction. I changed the switch and all came back to a normal state. BR. Daniel.

Yes, mine is one with separate solenoid on the fire wall with no piggy back on the starter itself. I'm trying desparately to deal with this myself and not having to resort to professional help!!  As I explained to  when I bought the vehicle...." don't worry dear, it will be very cheap to run as I will be able to do all the servicing etc." Replacing the solenoid seems a good place to start as not expensive and it will then point to the starter motor if problem persists (will be interesting to see how I cope with that one!!) Neil.
