I'm hoping to fix a leak, which looks like from the rear of the oil pan. I bought a new gasket that fits as far as shape and bolt-holes go, but has a number of protrusions around it. The protrusions have no mating holes to go into. The depressions in the pan aren't deep enough to accommodate them. Not a big deal to trim them down, but just want to know if I am missing something.

Also, the rear of the gasket sticks out beyond the pan flange. There is no room for this as the transmission plate is right up against the pan. I'll have to trim that off and use some sealer there.

Doesn't look the correct gasket to me, especially the third shot 1.35.28, with no bedding on the inner flange face

You guys are correct. Some sources say the Rover 800/400/200 pre-1990 used the M16 engine. Other sources give a different engine.

I'll have to find/order the correct one.

I believe the Rover M16 and T16 powered Plus 4's used same sump gasket sharing the same bottom end architecture.

There does seem to be a lot of confusion in this. I've gone back and forth a few times with Rimmerbros and they say the gasket with the rear protrusion is the correct one for the M16 engine. Looking at the VIN plate on my car, which was advertised as a 1989 Plus 4, may not be. Is this a 4/4?

The 1989 4/4 used a Ford 1.6L engine. Mine is definitely a Rover engine. And you can see the oil pan right up against the transmission adapter plate, so no room for a gasket that protrudes out there.

Going by the chassis number the car is a 4/4, however it looks to have a 2L M16 engine fitted either at the factory or a later upgrade.
The M16 would have had a LT77 Rover gearbox (reverse left and forward).

The engine block has been painted red, which could indicate it has been on a bench?

The m16 plus fours had the 4/4 chassis i think. The wider +8 coming along with the t16.i also remember on my t16 the log book said 4/4.

A little off the track of the oil pan gasket, but then again, maybe not as I'm trying to sort out why the gasket seems to be different than what some say it should be.

The engine was out of the car and rebuilt in 2013 at a place in Quebec, Canada. I have the bill for that ($8000 Canadian). That included new cylinder sleeves, pistons and pretty much everything. I've attached some pictures that came with the car.

The latest from Moss/Rimmer is that mine "may be the earlier 2.0L engine" and the gasket they are showing for it looks like the correct one. 2 versions of the M16 engine?

My gearbox has reverse left and forward.

you can the ask more specific questions regarding the Morgan Plus 4, it refers to the rear tab issue and the locating studs having to be trimmed off.

Use TM-IMG host and go down to the BB code medium size.

I find AI is no more accurate than suppliers. It is best to ask on a forum. However, check out everything.

Thank you Lorne, that is what we are doing of course.

I would hope there is someone out there that has done this job on an M16 or a T16, was there a tab to trim off or is there a different gasket for a different sump or was it standard for Morgan to trim off the tab as the engine was originally transverse?

As suggested, I asked ChatGPT about the correct gasket.

I've used Chat more recently and found it to be very helpful. It isn't always right, but if you suspect something is wrong, give it more information. Or it may ask for more. The fact that you can basically chat back and forth with it makes it much more powerful than just doing a google search. And going back and forth with a supplier eventually helped, after being told the correct gasket for my car was actually the wrong one. Moss/Rimmer did come up with the correct one eventually; the same one that Chat came up with.

Rick in essence you take the picture you want to display directly into a post then upload it to a third party site such as tm-img, once you have established an account with them. If you then click on uploaded picture on their website you will see a range of link options below. The one you need towards bottom of list is BBCode - full. Copy this using adjacent button then paste it into your Talk Morgan post. Sounds like a lengthy process but becomes second nature after a while.

FWIW most of the several other forums I belong require the same external picture hosting to display.

I did find proof that mine is a Plus 4.

I'm attaching the document here like I've been doing. Can't get the TM-IMG thing to work. I did use it since I posted a picture in the gallery. Now it won't accept my password, says it is sending an email to activate the account (and never does). I do belong to many car forums and this is only one of 2 that use a system like this. Probably because it is using very old software?
