Good advice Richard. Just dread trying to remove the strips.

I had exactly the same thing a couple of years back. On closer inspection, I also found strands broken at the bulkhead end as well. Having seen the horrendous price of a new Morgan one, I resorted to Carbuilder Solutions and purchased their cable repair kit in a tin (CRKIT). That comes with two long inners of different diameters and a good selection of universal nipples, at a current cost of just £12. It’s worth keeping one in the car, as it is very compact.

Morning Strathavon, Yep, rubber strips are a doddle to remove. When out using a very narrow wire channel brush clean up the rusted screw heads, they clean remarkably easily and you'll wonder how so much rusting has such little effect on them!
On refit I use red rubber grease for 2" on top of the cleaned heads and silicone grease on the rest of the channel as if you use a grease product on the whole channel the rubber tends to pop out. The silicone will wash out and you only really need it to ease the fitting of the rubber. When all back together run ACF-50 under all the channel between it and the wing. Let it sit overnight then wipe away residue in the morning. As Richard said, that's where the corrosion from water ingress originates. Most things on a Mog require finding the cause and rectifying it rather than treating the effect it caused.

Sewin, that sounds encouraging and worth trying. The bumps on my rubbers are not really significant tbh but I never ever thought that something needed done. Each of the three previous Mogs had the same issue!

The other tip, which I’m sure has been covered, is when refitting the rubber strips into the channel is to put the ends in first and work towards the middle. I used a really blunt old flat screwdriver and lube it and do a small bit at a time.
Oh and I put masking tape along the length of the strips before starting to remove the rubbers, The rusty bits that fall out are sharp and paintwork easily damaged.

Fitted a new silicon boot to the steering rack. Decided to remove it completely to make sure removing the clips didn’t cause damage and that the spacer washers wound up in the right place etc etc. Other than that it seemed reasonably straight forward.

This weekend we are doing a trip around the countryside. I had heard a slight squeak in the front end the other day. I pulled the hubs on both sides and inspected everything. I didn't have new seals, so I only repacked the small bearings, but everything looked fine. I put it back together and adjusted the crown nuts. Re-greased the sliding pillars. And greased the rear axles.

On the test drive, no more squeak. Now we just have to watch the weather. There's a Nor'easter heading our way. Hoping it stays to the south.
