Can anyone measure the length of the mounting bracket that affixes to the doors. My older car has quite long brackets comapred to some I've seen and as the ratchet mechanism on the driver's side is pretty stuffed I need to replace the base section (might as well go for some mirrors with better rearward visibility at the same time... smile ).

Hello Gajet, I didn't realise Halcyon did them too. Having compared the photos of each, I see that the ball/socket on the Morgan Hoods type is closer to the edge of the mirror, possibly allowing a greater range of adjustment.

Librands stainless on mine, in the original base/arm assembly. The only problem I had was that the new mirror stem is 10mm whereas the original was 9.5mmm and so wouldn't go through the plastic gland at the top of the arm, which is soft plastic on mine. If it had been hard plastic (as some I have seen) I could have reamed or drilled it out, but this wasn't possible with the soft material. So I just cut a slit in the plastic along its length, this allowed the new stem to slide through and then refitted the gland into the arm and tightened the screw.

I think the best solution would be to buy a set of base/arm + stem/mirror so that everyhting just bolts on in one go. Also you'd then have a stainless base, no pitting. More ££ though.

And definitely buy the convex ones if you want to have any reasonable rearward visiblity, especially on the passenger side.

Nigel

Ho hum.
New brackets are longer - o/a base length 100mm approx, with some 65mm between screw holes on the older version...
Not knowing where the underlying wood is under the door skin, that's something else to hold off for a while...

Cheers,

With regard to the .5mm difference in the stem ...

1 Don't panic
2 Make a brew
3 Pour another cup of hot water and pop the grommets in
4 Drink your brew
5 Carefully remove your, now quite warm, grommets from the hot water and slide over the stem for a snug fit! No cutting or drilling required.

Tried heating them, it didn't work. The slit did the job, and is covered up by the black plastic boot anyway. In place now for 3 years without a problem.

I took this ones from my dealer.

http://www.morgan-flaving.de/shop/product_info.php?info=p138_Aussenspiegel.html

I don´t know the brand. They are convex for a bigger field of vision and a little smaller than the factory items. And very easy to fit to the original mounting. Because they are smaller I can drive 100 mph without swinging in mirrors.
