once it is proved the mechanism is working, then the Timing would have to be set, a little more complex than a Mechanic showing you in 5mins, I THINK All I wanted to say is that the Mechanic would show which bolt to loosen and which way the distributor has to be turned a small fraction to advance or retard the ignition - and give the appropriate health and safety warnings (as good Mechanics do). This method is good enough to find the point just before the beginning of pinking on an engine which runs o.k. otherwise. To be very thourough we maybe had to start with adjusting the valve timing  BTW not every distributor has a vacuum mechanism. And on many highly tuned engines (Loti) it is disconnected. i am not sure where we are going here, adjusting valve timing to cure PINKING !!!! if valve timing adjustment was required i think you would have a lot more issues than pinking, !!!!

Oh yes... the octane. It seems here in the States, we have Regular - 87 octane, Mid - 89 octane, and Hi - 92 octane. I wish I could find the 97 octane. That may be the culprit. I have a new tank of the hi in it, and hope it fixes the run-on dieseling.
I'll have to learn what the Advance/Retard is on the distributor and find out what proper heat range plugs to use.
Thanks Hi Vitruvius I hope I do not repeat in a redundant way what someone else might has said (I haven´t read all comments very detailed) When I visited your country two years ago I was wondering how all the Porsches etc. could run with just 93 octane maximum to be offered. The solution is, you have different octane ratings: In Europe RON, in the US AKI 97 RON = 92 AKI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

Heinz, Thanks. I was suspisious about the octane ratings. I guess it is like British gallons versus U.S. gallons. All the cars in England get better gas milage than they do here in the States.
Bodger, Thanks for your notes. It is always good to hear from you. We have a MOG event the weekend of June 1st and I will talk to my mechanic then about the tuning.

I don't think that an engineering degree is needed to adjust the ignition timing. Anyone can do it, especially on an old non hi-tec engine on which trial and error often gives better results than going by the book!

Update - I drove the car for over 200 miles this past weekend without a problem. I have been keeping it fed with high octane fuel and it shut down calmly every time except for one when it shuddered for only a second. It seems that it must be the carbs, mixture, and type of fuel that has caused the issue. Of course the weather was fantastic. It wasn't more than 77 degrees F.
