I like the new B class, less awkward than the old shape with a still nice and upright driving position: Would think 45 mpg easily achievable in a diseasel in every day jaunting. Alternatively the new Mazda CX5 looks lovely (IMHO of course) I'll try and find a photo photo for your delectation

I can recommend the new Kia Ceed. Looks not that bad, build quality is not much behind the germans, reasonable price. We even drive a Kia Picanto (9000€) as a daily driver, as my company's parking lot is small and crowded and the car looks like Scarface after just one year. Couldn't bear to park something nice in there. Before that I drove a Subaru Impreza. The new one with the boxer-diesel under the bonnet is really nice. No diesel-vibrations, four wheel drive and not seen at every corner. The Subaru XV is a taller alternative. (Note to myself: Have to test-drive the new Subaru BRZ... )

Brother-in-Law has a diesel Forrester - he's impressed with it. His earlier petrol version suffered top end engine wear at quite low mileage (but he didn't buy it new, so we don't know how it was treated in its early miles).

I have a friend who owns a Lexus hybrid and a 4/4.
The Lexus is very impressive and I don't think it suffers too much when left unused for a few days.

I'm with Graham on this one: our Skodas are comfortable. reliable and quite pleasant to drive. The Octavia estate has oodles of room.

Howard, Mini Countryman might be a contender, a contractor who works for me has gone Korean, new Kia Sportage and had a few ' issues'

Skoda Yeti for me, I think it's the best 'normal' car on sale, benefit of dual clutch too.

Our companies run quite a large fleet of Kia's in Africa, from Picanto to Sportage and I must say that we are extremely pleased with them. Very reliable, well-built and quite stylish. My current Optima witha 2-litre petrol engine is a nice car, though not in any way a driving machine! The only negative for us is that in our market, they are starting to close the large gap in pricing with the Japanese that they previously enjoyed.
