I would & did drive in the 70s by bike Burgos,Madrid, Toledo,Orgaz, Cuidad Real, Cordoba, Seville are all stunning but Cordoba & Seville show off the Moorish history. This was a quiet route missing the M ways.

Granda and the Alhambra is also excellent.

Having lived in the Algarve for 4 years then of course I can recommend that..but not so much the busy parts around Faro. Its also very warm in summer.. If your looking for some nice scenery and relative quiet then try the Western Algarve and the west coast around Sagres and Cape St Vincent. Lagos is a pretty and relatively unspoilt city with loads of history. Unless you want British food and to bump into loads of Brits I would avoid Praia de Luz.

The bit of Portugal between Lisbon and the Algarve is called the Alentejo and not only produces nice wines but also has some pretty scenery near the Algarve.

Moving across into Spain I would also recommend the Granada and Alhambra areas for touring.

We had a great holiday in Northern Spain last year.
Wonderful scenery, superb and quiet roads and pure Spain. In 2 weeks, other than when we were at the port, we only saw two UK registered vehicles.
If you want peace, quiet and an amazing location; the Halcon Palace at Cofino (Asturias) is worth a look. . plain and un-pretentious.

Dave,
Spectacular mountain range/national park the Picos de Europa in northern Spain is not too far from Bilbao. Gorges to drive through (some really good roads too), 2,500m peaks, lots of walking etc if you want it.
Really pleased we went there, and like you was searching for somewhere different to go in the mog. We may go back at some point for part 2 !
Also no brits ! wink
