I wonder if Castrol R will be ok, I just love the smell. I even put an egg cup full into the fuel tank on my Honda powered lawn mower just for the VSCC smell whilst cutting the grass, sad I know!

I will give that a go. I am with you on the aroma.

I doubt it will do the cats and the O2 sensors in the exhaust system much good. I definately would not put any oil in the fuel of a modern.

Hi Ivanford, I meant in the lawnmower, or strimmer. Mixer it to the 50:1 formula.

Well, prompted by this thread, for which many thanks Charlie, I bought some expensive [as opposed to VERY expensive] Harley Davidson 20-50 oil and a filter yesterday, and did the first oil change at around 350 miles. As you would expect the oil that came out was as clean as a whistle, but then again, I wouldn't expect to see little bits of metal floating around in it.

I can report that it is an easy job, I removed the lower of the two pipes supplying the engine from the tank and just let the tank drain through, jacking the car on the offside to tip the old oil towards the tank exit, then undid the sump bolt with an appropriate allen key and drained out another cup or so, then undid the screw off filter canister on the nearside of the engine, tucked up just inside the front chassis rail, behind the blacked finned 'thingy'. I had to use an oil cannister strap on a rachet to move it, but it wasn't unduly tight, and easy enough to replace with a new HD cannister [£10 from my local HD dealer], obviously with a smear of grease on the rubber seal. Poured in 6 litres of oil and let it tick over for a few moments and hey presto, good for another 500-600 miles.

Paul, my only concern with doing it this way (and I can't see any other) is the effect pulling off the hoses will have over a period of time, and also ensuring they go back on without leaking.

Would it possibly be better to use a transfer pump or something similar to drain the tank?

Get a tank with screw on couplings or one with a drain plug?
Basically look at old British iron that had dry sumps.

But also what if you drain the oil via the sump plug is there a way to do that?
Normally there is a valve arrangement around the pump.
Any help on HD rider web sites?

My J.A.P. LTOW is dry sump. It's still got a drain plug, but you'll only get about 1/2 an egg cup full of oil if you remove it. But since the oiling is also total loss, I never have to drain the oil tank as it has only got new oil in it.

Common for bikes to be similar up to about 1930 when recirculated oiling took over.

I honestly don't think there will be a problem with removing the rubber tube from the engine, just loosen the jubilee clip and pull off, thee are no serations, just plain pipe. I guess as the engine is 'pulling' oil in from the tank, it won't blow off. If the pipe ever gets a little stretched. there is plenty of spare pipe, so it's just a matter of cutting half an inch or so off. Sorry, that is probably a cm or so.
