This thread brings up painful memories for me and if I didn't like +8Rich as much as I do, I may bend the rules of TM on this occasion and make the creation of this thread a banning offence! grin2

I just console myself with even had I purchased the three cars at the points in time that I viewed them, all of which are now stratospherically out of my price range, I probably would have sold them before they went crazy anyway... (you're still in my bad books Rich somestick nono laugh2 )

Fond memories of the 70'ds fuel crisis and 3 day week. I had a Vauxhall Viva GT as my daily commute, and that was a car that always begged to be driven hard, trying to squeeze more miles out every last drop did my head in. My father had a Jag 420G and that was lucky to see 10 to 12 mpg around town..

The car I missed acquiring was a Vauxhall Lotus Carlton, my company car they offered to sell to me and I stupidly said no and it wasn't for much money.. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

When I bought my Scimitar I had the chance of an AC 3000ME .... was more expensive so passed on it ... really enjoyed the Scimitar but have regretted not owning the AC more than a few times since! 🙂

Mine has to be a 1275 Cooper S, I was 20 and had a 998 Cooper which was a hoot and whilst looking for a replacement I got diverted by the charms of open top motoring so a 1275 Midget it was. I think the mini might have made those romantic entanglements a little easier though!

In 2006 I passed over on a slightly tatty DB5, asking price £29,750. My wife said the mortgage had to come first.

Never owned a Ferrari, a Dino or 308GTB were desired at the time. I did spend a fair bit of time hands on with a 400i, wonderful engine, but other than that I was not impressed much.

There was an S2 Esprit I offered £1500 for when the guy wanted £3k, I should have offered more.
A real Audi Quattro was never quite affordable either, would have been a good punt by now though.

In the late-1980's I decided to view an orange TVR Tuscan (classic) like this one. It was a long drive from the New Forest to Norfolk, and my wife wasn't impressed that I left at very short notice as she had started preparing Sunday lunch. I didn't buy the car (what a missed opportunity, there were only a few niggles), but I still recall with a chuckle that she threw a hard boiled agg at me which hit me on the neck -- she said she had ovulated... I think she's almost forgiven me by now....

Alfa Spider Series 4 is one of them for me. When I first fell in love with the car I simply could not afford it. Now it's a matter of being a tad put off by the can of worms I might be opening.

The other being an air-cooled 911. As with the above, it would likely be cost prohibitive to own one.

1982 having just bought my first house (in a house share agreement) for £25k, decided against a DB6 at £4,200. It wanted some bodywork attention.

In 1999 Amalah and I went to look at a Ferrari Dino for sale at our Ferrari dealer, It was for sale for £33k. The dealer owner, unusually, a woman, had a bit of an attitude to us possibly because I had turned up in our shopping trolly and said she could not find the keys. We said we would come back later, meanwhile we had a roam around the nearby Mercedes Garage where Amalah fell in love with the (then) novel convertible roof of the SLK. So that was bought for her!. She still has the SLK and I remind her at least once a year that the SLK is worth £3k and the Dino would be worth £350k.Ah well

My first company car was an open option as I worked for a small company with a petrol head boss.

The Fiat Strada Abarth 130TC had just come out and had big Recaros, a 2L 2*dual carb weber engine and lots of black plastic body kit. I was in love. I got a test drive and fell in love. For a FWD car it was amazing. Sadly insurance were not so keen so it was off the list. Still I did get a Renault 5GT Turbo so life remained good.

I remember in the 'fuel crisis of the 70's seeing a 246 Dino in Exchange and Mart for £2000. It was so tempting but I already had a 3ltr Marcos (and no garage) so had to pass on it ... still think about it - that 'what if' feeling.

If we are talking about cars I went to buy with the money in my pocket, there was a Gilbern Invader Estate in Kent which was nothing like the images provided, although he did take me down the A 20/M20 at over 100mph.

Then there was the orange Lotus Elise. New. Main dealer. Test drive just didn't do it for me. I was mega disappointed, because I went to buy that one.

The others were not that close. Never been interested in the supercar end. My choices have always been for small/compact cars, because I find them the most fun.

Peter, around the same time as your missed opportunity during the fuel crisis, I was trying to sell my old 6276cc Jensen interceptor, no takers... ended up swapping it for a rusted out 912...

Just a very few years earlier, someone offered me an E Type when I had advertised the LWB Safari which I had rebuilt out of three old LR`s, and I remember nocking him back saying..."Do you think I am nuts.."..!!!

Yeah time changes much... (-:
