Noticeable shift towards the Wintery up here.

The main Job ..... panels welded in and given some judicious tapping .....( foot-long butt welds on 0.7mm flat sheet aren't any welder's favourite job ) .... decent enough result (good enough for me, as I'm not a Pebble Beach Concours judge with a microscope) .... quick shot of primer as it's hard to judge flatness with the colour differences of the steel and welded area ... all to be stripped back for paint now.



Side job ... I like these as they give instant gratification from something started and finished in a few hours .... raided the scrap bin for some stainless sheet and rod plus a bit of brass rod and made a new battery tray .... folded base with the corners stainless welded and polished back .... clamp bar cut from an old bit of stainless box section ..... bent and threaded the J-bolts out of 6mm rod and ran them past the polisher as I couldn't find ready made ones the right length in stainless .... happy enough with that.

Ps the rough line you can see a few inches up on the front bit is the edge of the old paint I ground back to stop it stinking while I was welding .... the welded join is horizontal under the bottom of the weather bead.

Can I please ask What grade Cratex stick did you use for the engine turning?

Uther ..... it's the fine one (described as reddish brown in their catalogue) ..... as the 3/4 rod won't fit in most normal drill chucks I turned up the holder to take about 2" of it .... you don't want it too long as it may flex and be less accurate ... the rod is hard rubber and just a good push fit in the end) 6" of the rod will last a lifetime unless you decide to engine-turn a passing cruise liner..... was going to suggest I send you the lot to have a play with for a while .... til I saw where you are .... a bit impractical methinks!!

Thanks for that info Keith, I have always wondered how this was done. It was a kind thought to loan it to me but yes I am a bit far away making that impractical 😄. I will ordera fine rod locally today, and the photo of your holder is very a handy, I have a good friend with a lathe and will see if he can make me a holder.

John .... if you look back at the pic of the dash sat on the old belt-drive drill press you can see I marked the dash out with a grid with a sharpie .... just a matter of hitting every cross ... helps keep straight and even ... not hard ... just tedious if it's a big area..... good luck with it

Thanks, I saw that grid then forgot to ask what you used to Mark it with 👍🏻

John ..... the grid was 1/2" x 1/2" to create an overlap of the swirls using the 3/4" rod .... any sharpie that hangs about can be wiped off using acetone or methylated spirit (or whatever that's called in Tasmania )
