Jack stands I made to support the cross head/axle when using a lift or stands

Forgive me, but after 30 years, I am solidly (PUN!) with Arwyn. I have no wish no try to thread needles with tonne + weights. Axle stands allow for a bit of leeway. They are cheap and solid.

That being said, when home, I jack my Morgans up with a floor jack (They are a smarter design and can descend lower than other jacks.) I keep two around. You will thank me for that After jacking, I carefully place my stands and then lower the car onto them and LEAVE the jack in place. This is an area where redundancy is very smart.

When on the road, I am forced to use silly bottle or scissors jacks. And automobiles are not equipped with jack stands of any type. The wisest precaution in such cases, when changing a tyre, is to leave the flat tyre under the vehicle adjacent to the jack. That is an easy way to save yourself and the car should the jack slip. Changes a disaster into a minor annoyance.

Sewin is not talking about floor jacks - it's for a post lift. Not sure how you'd use an axle stand when the vehicle is 1 metre in the air?

I misunderstood Sewin https://www.talkmorgan.com/ubbthreads.php/galleries/794997/re-jack-stands#lg=793936&slide=1

Few of us have floor lifts. And they are more a question of ceiling height than the cost of the lift. And if you have a proper floor lift, why does one need any stands at all?

I am always fascinated about the tools and methods moggers use. Thank you TBM

It's a 2 post lift that lifts on the chassis rails. The stands support the crosshead whilst up in the air (or axle)

Forgive me TBM. after reading these posts again I see nothing to change my comments, only m,ore reasons to reinforce them. In my humble opinion, the methods displayed are inherently unsafe, take too much space for 95% of home garagistes, have no redundancy and are expensive. (In that order of concern) Of course, Arwyn lifts Morgans infinitely more often than the normal and I have a regular sized garage and I often lift the Morgan while mogging (months at time).

As I described, it is easy to use inexpensive jacks. I find SMALL jacks are better than the far more expensive large ones shown as they are easier to find in a design that has a lower minimum height, necessary to slip the jack under the registration plate holder panel at the rear so as to access the the jacking point under the rear frame. (N.B. people, jack the rear before the front when you are jacking the whole car or you will be annoyed with yourself.) Two such jacks (with stands) cost about 50-60 in North America. If we describe and cater only to the rare situations, are we helping the community? However, I am fully familiar with the GoMoG Law of Expenditure: The likelihood of a car enthusiast reviewing anything he has already purchased with passionate approval is directly related to how much money he spent on it." Sorry to be so direct but you wanted a more through explanation. At that, it is merely my opinion.

In another life my dream garage would have a 4 post lift and 3 meter ceiling. Sadly, it is too hard to build anything in Canada now (regulations). I gave up frown2 And I have no need of one in the Andes. A moto lift is unnecessarry

Not a problem. Just trying to correct your misunderstandings about the reasons for their creation and usage. I accept that's a futile endeavour. You stick with your axle stands and floor jacks.

TBM,

I have just added a few pic's showing the screw jack stands in use. Again I just couldn't get them to attach other than through the Morgan photo gallery..
You will see why I made them as the overhang from the bulkhead jacking point on the lift leaves all that weight hanging in free air , and forward of that is the majority of the total weight of the car!

I must persevere with the posting issue with pictures as quite actually a picture really is self explaining!

Or just send them to me (lg@gomog.com) in any format with instructions of how you want them put together. After your approval, I can post them to a gomog temp directory and send you the link

Thanks TBM,

I wrote a whole scree explaining the wot's and why's I'd made them and sent it to post as the internet went down!

Gone into the ether I'm afraid but I'll repeat it tomorrow! Thanks for explaining the thoughts behind my project and hopefully these pictures will explain it a little better.

Why some thought of them as stands or lifting jacks I'll never understand but around here I'm known as the most risk adverse person that ever breathed so you won't be surprised when I tell you the stands are rated to carry a load of 4 tonne each!

Martin.
