As I see it...
Iron & steel bearing surfaces ( bores, rings, crankshafts ) will work harden over a period of time. The more you allow this work hardening to build up, the better the life of the engine. I've heard of traction engine bores that need diamond tools to break the skin on the bores! OK, so 100 years may be stretching the running in a bit... laugh2
Agreed, machining standards are worlds apart from yesteryear & you can work an engine hard after 1000 miles or so & that engine will still give you 100,000 miles or more. But I still believe that a well run in engine will run better than a thrashed one. Each to his own, but I'll run mine in oldgit drive
