I can! I still have a piece of the partly rotten board from below the door of my old 4/4 with shrapnels in it. I ruined a sawblade when I tried to saw the healthy part of the board for an other purpose. So at least in the mid sixties they still used ash from the Ardennes.

BTW heat threatened wood is usually exempt from the bans in the EU. At least this applied to American an Chinese wood.
