You can get them out, but it's a slow process. Don't use an electric drill. If that slips you're in trouble. I sheared the drivers side after a few months. I used a pin chuck (modellers hand driven miniature drill worked by finger & thumb), and over a few evenings drilled down the centre with a very fine drill. Eventually I hit sawdust so I know I'd got the full length. Then I used a triangular mini modellers file, "tapped" into the hole. It unscrewed easily from that. What a relief. A braver man than I could use a Dremel much quicker, but as I said, if it slips it will make things a lot worse.
I have a variable speed Dremel, not sure I've got a bit thin enough - but I might have.
It might be worth a go as I'd prefer to have the original fitting...
