Thanks everybody, my inclination was it was an earth problem but having cleaned and re attached the battery & starter earths I was at a bit of a loss.
Graham, your tip to jump the positive straight through to the starter, that leaves everything connected as normal but adds an extra boost straight to the starter motor?
To answer NeilM, once fired up once she starts every time without any hesitation.
Plenty to do this weekend, lets home things warm up a little
