BTW, I am probably being a bit stupid here, but where are the emoticons hidden? :-( I would use them if I knew where they are.

As for emoticons, when you press quote or reply you will see a smiley top lhs of the text box. Click that and you get a list.
If you simply type in the "quick reply" box you don't get that but you do get a button saying something like "switch to full reply screen" which if you click will get you to the reply box that has the smiley
