I have a vague memory it was done in the 70's or 80's to standardise control layout. Prior to that each manufacturer made up their own mind.
I think indicator on the right for LHD was favored by the USA and Europe, visa versa for Japan and so UK ended up with left hand indicators.
Someone with a better memory than mine might be able to shed more light...
