Thanks Dan that looks very smart - I'm pretty sure we would need wipers and washers on a fixed windshield over here.

Richard, most hot rodders go without wipers and just use RainX on their windshields and the water just beads off and clear sailing ahead.
This is one of those things where local regulations come into play. In the UK, it's a windscreen if you look though it, and aeroscreen if you can get adequate forward visibility looking over it. And wipers and washers are needed for windscreens in the UK.
I'd not be surprised if the regulations in Australia were similar, but I'll have to leave it to residents of that country to find out.
