Mine frayed as yours has done but snapped at the other end. Replacement is a bit awkward as you're head first in the footwell trying to re-attach the cable to the accelerator pedal.
If you're a BFG you'll find it a struggle; if toned and lithesome you'll be OK

Mine was designed to fail at the bulkhead end owing to the angle of the sleeve that goes through the bulkhead which needs to be realigned to the angle of the cable.
