Agreed that the Toyota package is quality piece of kit and the conversion looks well tested and set up. The driving experience seems to have improved significantly from what you describe although I am still taken aback by the extent of change to achieve it.
Actually it's not the Toyota VVT engine, but the GM Opel Ecotec X18XEV unit as fitted to Astra SRis. But you're right, it is definitely quite a big change from a carbed pre-lean burn CVH. But to go more or less anywhere from there needs a lot of change. If the difference in performance wasn't so staggering, it would be difficult to justify it.
