There have been one or two spare wheel thefts - one is recorded further up this thread. When we toured Scotland I fitted a Halfords combination lock with a wire, but it looks 'tacky'. At least this way you need an open ender to release the wheel, and it takes time rather than just whipping off the T bar. In truth, a rack makes it slightly harder to get at the spare, but you never know. There are people out there who would pinch a spare just because they can.

On the subject of my column, thanks for the compliments. It takes a great deal of effort to knock this out every month without too much repetition, and I'm under pressure to write the next one now, for the next Miscellany. I'm up to number 55 and am thinking now about when to pass the job on. I'll be doing Llangollen in June, probably Milton Keynes in 2016, but I think by then it will be time to go. That's about another 25 columns so I'd better get on with it.

Peter will find out how hard this is in two years!
