1970s and 1980s cars had the pipes flattened along two 5 or 6 inch lengths corresponding to the tyre sidewalls. There's a slight reduction in diameter but I suspect no difference in performance.
I suspect the the kink makes it more difficult to align the exhaust system and prevent rattling and contact with the chassis.
