It does look as if by mid 2014 pretty much all of the more major problems had been sorted and the good news is that for earlier models there are well known and documented "upgrades" eg compensator, "comfort" steering etc.
Many of us use our M3Ws regularly and for extended trips without problems so if you are considering one then just go for it
