It's all gone bad really in the last 200 years.
Too much car dependancy, and too much dependancy on flying - all consuming huge amounts of fossil fuel.
Workers live too far away from the workplace and this is the major problem in the UK. Congestion is getting impossible in rush hours and quite bad during the day.
There's no obvious solution to this dependancy without spending a lot of money.
