In the days before satnavs, I used to use my Dictaphone (cue the inevitable jokes :))
I would simply record the route instructions, and play them back, hitting the pause button after each instruction until I needed the next one. For complex instructions I would record the same one two or three times so I didn't have to faff about rewinding to make sure I had got it.
First one coming.....
My mate used a dictaphone until he was arrested!
