Your solution sounds like a good alternative and one I had not even considered. The screen being in shade is clearly a huge bonus.
Do you have a photo of the installation?
If I can find the self adhesive plate you refer to I could try the same as you but using the Garmin Suction Mount on it - what size is the self adhesive plate please? Would it be large enough to accept a suction mount 3" in diameter?
My Garmin GPS62 is a waterproof handheld unit that runs off 2 x AA batteries so power, at present, is not required. The batteries last about 8 hours so I carry some spares or for trips plan on two batteries a day.
I know that a powered Tom Tom or similar would probably give me more functionality but I have used the Garmin unit for about 5 years now, both on foot and on the motorcycle and it has proved to be really useful (especially with failing eyesight: pulling out a map, checking it quickly and then putting it away and heading off is a thing of the past for me these days - it's much more like: lift helmet front, pull out map, find reading glasses and put them on, check map, take off glasses and put them away, do up pocket, put away map, pull down helmet and set off, then within two minutes I am thinking was that the B4931 or the B4391....).
I'm not sure of the functionality of the car based GPS systems these days, but one of the great advantages of the old GPS62 is that I can pre-programme in the exact routes I want to take from my PC (using Basecamp software). That way I do the routes I want and not the routes the GPS wants me to. Maybe things have moved on since I bought my GPS but apart from the relatively small screen it has been absolutely bombproof. And I already have it, so if I can I would like to use it in the Morgan.
