In reality Jay a vast area of Australia is not covered at all: but then in that vast area there are not that many people anyway. Even in some areas where quite a few tourist finish up there is no signal at all. That is why all the rental 4X4s in SA, WA and the Northern Territory have an EPIRB by law, so that people can call for help if they get stuck. Warnings that phone blackspots on the Oodnadatta Track will cost lives
