When I first had a car with an MMC easy up hood Phil at AWSC advised never ever trying to release the rear (even just for behind the seat access) without first taking the tension off the front header rail by loosening the two A post clamps.
Try it, it makes a big difference to the load required to operate the rear hoop release lever.
