Well I'm still not sure how the water drains out of the housing, but I know MMC won't have a problem with you using a plug.
To my best recollection, the early M3W's came without a grease fitting in the compensator and there was no hole in the bottom of the housing.
I hope it works out for you. It will definitely help to reduce the debris in the housing.
