Could you post a picture of the car with the original number plate to see how that area beneath the grill is originally covered? The wing mounted number plate looks great. I wouldn't have thought it would be too difficult to get something fabricated and sprayed the same colour as the car to cover up that space.

Simply removing the number plate doesn't help, the mounting box front isn't attractive at all.
So it needs a properly formed and finished trim piece to "join" the bottom of the radiator cowl to the lower trim.
