We do return in a convoy using the track. However, there is an alternative route, indeed one of the places with a great number of spectators is precisely near the end of the track (last hairpin). Must be said that I do not know how to get there (never asked) but I think it is a long-ish way around in back roads.

This year I went with Calum and Peter (taking advantage of some 3 hours between climbs, on Sunday) to a viewing area about 1/4 into the length of the track. You must do some, but not much, mountain walking.

All that said, still most people stay and watch the event around the start line and the museums
