I would not rely on a phone alone (I used the iPhone with Tom-Tom for a long time), but 2 years ago I decided on a stand alone. Now I have a Garmin (with is compatible with my wife's Mini's business solution-the reason we choose for Garmin), but I prefer the more intuitive Tom-Tom we had in the past. I use my Phone for back-up, at least for the Garmin we have lifetime updates.
