Isn't this really about bad choices or bad cars? When I started out with cars, they were cheap cars. My first Anglia and first Mini were £100 each and total sheds. So I didn't keep them long and saved up and borrowed money, and eventually moved into the £750-£1,000 bracket.
I still moved them on quickly to move up even further, but when I paid £4,500 for a nearly new MG Metro, I kept it for over ten years. It did the job and there was no reason to change. Since then, most of our cars have stayed long term. The Gilbern Invader didn't because it was trouble. That went in a year, but most of the others have stuck around for ten plus years, and in two cases, 22 years.
