I managed to drill off the head of the screw without damaging the plastic lens.... happy3 happy3

Discovered some clever person had started the screw cross threaded. But with it all apart I was able to re-cut the thread from the back, un damaged side of the brass top hat using a good screw.

Now all I need is a new screw!

When I replaced my lenses (for clear) , I managed to source some Allen head , Stainless screws to replace the chromed steel (?) originals as I have found these can (and do ) rust quite quickly.

It seems that the most recent Lucas lights using the L794 cover use these non metric threaded screws. Tarka was built in late 2013, so it seems earlier cars may have different fittings.
Holden sell the original screws, but I like the look of pan head Allen screws!!
